The Importance of Zinc

By Alison Held, M.S.

Zinc is needed for many important functions of the body including the ability to make tymic hormones, insulin and growth hormones. Our immunity needs zinc to thrive and our DNA and protein is synthesized using zinc. Even our bones and skin rely on zinc. Are you overlooking this important nutrient?

The RDA for zinc is 12 mg daily for women, 15 mg daily for men, and 10 mg for all children. You may be getting just enough from your diet but what if you aren't? Our taste acuity relies on zinc so perhaps you aren't getting the absolute pleasure from your food or those 100 enzymes in the body that rely on zinc aren't able to function optimally.

While deficiency is not all that common, there are some types of individuals that should be supplementing.  Alcoholics, vegetarians, anemics and those having a poor appetite should all be tested.

If you're depressed or have a tendency towards depression, think zinc (and Vitamin D).  There are studies proving that low blood levels of zinc exist in those that are depressed.  Luckily if zinc is taken in small doses over time, it can calm the nervous system and perhaps help with a more positive outlook on life.

Do you know of someone with an eating disorder?  I think we have all met or heard of someone with anorexia or bulimia.  Zinc is one nutrient these individuals would most likely do well with.

While zinc is not often mentioned in mainstream media, it is important that your body have enough.  It is inexpensive but as with any supplementation, make sure you go with a high quality brand that is readily absorbed by the body.  Be careful not to overdose as toxic amounts might result in lowering of the "good" cholesterol, decreased levels of copper and low white blood cell count.  It is best to work with a qualified healthcare professional to make sure you are taking the proper amount.  There is a very simple test you can do while working with a trained nutritionist called "The Zinc Challenge" that does not cost a dime...consider giving it a try sometime soon!
