Is it best to buy organics?
There is much debate over organics vs. non organics. But let’s look to this new study conducted by Dr. Maria Amodio and Dr. Adel Kader from University of California Davies which shows that there is quite a difference in nutrients when food is grown organically. In this study of kiwis it was found that the organic one contained:
- Significantly higher levels of vitamin C (14% more)
- Greater antioxidant activity (15% more polyphenols)
- A higher mineral concentration
- A darker color and thicker skin (possibly for natural protection)
Some question the impact any of this will truly have on our overall health. They argue the differences are so small and insignificant. Studies similar to the kiwi are proving that some of these “traditional” viewpoints may need to be looked at more closely. The purchase of organics is on the rise and conventional grocery stores are stocking their shelves with organics due to consumer demand.
It is my feeling that fresh organic produce is just what the body ordered. It’s free of unnatural substances, usually tastes more alive and provides greater mineral and vitamin content. Choose organics and you may find yourself filling up faster, losing inches around your waist and adding some extra energy to your daily routine.
